Microplastics
Plastic water bottles break down into microplastics that end up in our oceans, air and often times our bodies. These microplastics can give out toxic chemicals into water or food affecting the organisms that eat or swim in those conditions.
Lack of recycling
Only about 12% of plastic water bottles are recycled in the USA. Apart from lack of will to recycle these bottles, only certain types of plastics are recyclable different plastics can’t be recycled together. On top of that recycling plastic water bottles is intensive a lot of recycling centers opt to downcycle instead of recycle, leading to the plastic ending up in landfills or worse, in the ocean.
